About the course
A Level
This course demands an understanding of practitioners and various genres of theatre and the ability to apply them into a devised piece of theatrical performance that will be shown to an outside audience. This is followed by an externally examined written unit which requires the detailed study of one set play text and one prescribed historical period of theatrical development.

Component 1
40% of the overall A-Level
Devising
Using a Stimulus, in groups students will create their own play 25-30 minutes long using a combination of acting styles and performance techniques inspired by the Practitioner Artaud. Students complete a 2500-3000 word Portfolio mapping their devising process and evaluating the work that they have created. Completed in Year 12.
Component 2
20% of the overall A-Level
A Performance from a play text Text - Students will perform in Group Performance piece and either a Monologue or a Duologue. They will be directed in these scenes and will be assessed on their Acting and Performance ability. This is assessed by a visiting examiner and will take place in Spring of Year 13.
Component 3
40% of the overall A-Level
Theatre Makers in Practice - a 2 hour 30 minutes written exam.
Section A will focus on a play text which they have studied across the 2 years (Machinal) and Section B will be a directorial concept section on the play Woyzeck, and Section C will be a Theatre Review based on a production seen in Year 13. This will be completed at the end of the course in Summer of Year 13.

5 grade 5s and above at GCSE, which includes at least a 5 in Drama and English.
If you have not taken GCSE Drama you must have a grade 6 in English, evidence of performance/theatre experience and produce a piece of written work which will need to be emailed to the Curriculum Leader for Drama prior to enrolling. You will be asked to write a 500-1000 word Theatre Review about a piece of live theatre that you have been to see or watched online.
