Music at Key Stage 3
Since our school is named after the father of English church music, Thomas Tallis, music making forms a central feature of our culture of learning. Music can change the way pupils feel, think and act. It helps forge identity and can increase self-esteem. Music brings together intellect and feeling and enables personal expression, reflection and emotional development. We believe that the joy of making, understanding and appreciating music should be available to all children, including those with a particular talent. There are lots of opportunities for students of all abilities to play and sing individually, in bands and in other ensembles to a variety of audiences both in and out of school.
At Tallis we encourage active involvement in different forms of music-making, both individual and communal, helping to develop a sense of group identity and togetherness. Music learning develops pupils’ critical skills: their ability to listen, to appreciate a wide variety of music, and to make judgements about musical quality. It also increases self-discipline, creativity, aesthetic sensitivity and fulfilment. We take full advantage of our wonderful facilities to create, record and perform music. We have large classroom spaces, a professionally equipped recording studio, a recital room, rehearsal rooms and a Main Hall with seating for 270 people.
This year we are working very closely with our wonderful team of specialist peripatetic music teachers in order to provide access to even more music making for Year 7 students in class. We hope to extend this provision in future years. Private tuition is available on piano, guitar (classical and electric), bass guitar, drums and voice. We are hoping to employ a string and brass teacher in the near future. Individual music tuition is free for all disadvantaged students.
Our Christmas Concert is always standing room only and there are regular recital evenings for talented musicians in the form of relaxed showcases and more formal piano recitals, band night, acoustic nights and guitar shows. In the summer we enjoy playing outside. Music forms an integral feature of cross-curricular events such as the annual Festival of Light.
